For issue date 2009-06-06, the top fifty songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 include thirteen songs by women, eight by mixed groups, and twenty-nine by men.

This is one more song by a mixed group and one fewer song by women than last week.

Yeah, I really need to get these their own page before they get any more boring.
Spinner has a short interview with Ida Maria, who says, “I really want girls to pick up the guitar or drum sticks or make some noise.”
Also, I’m really liking her track “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked.” You should go listen to it on her MySpace page.
Look! It’s another update! This week, the Nielsen soundscan chart had six songs by women, twelve by mixed groups, and thirty-two by men.

Conclusions: So far, the Nielsen is the boringest chart, in that it doesn’t seem to change much. Also, I really need to get to work on putting together a page for these.
Via NxEW, which got it from CBC Radio 3 on Twitter: Girls Rock Camp Vancouver needs instruments. They’re looking for donations or loans of instruments, cables, PA’s, tuners, and other stuff; go see their site for details.
From their site:
As a new project for female youth, Girls Rock Camp Vancouver is an empowering journey to allow females from ages 8-18 years, to have the opportunity to explore, access and play music with positive mentors, surroundings and workshops. As our society continues to push unattainable body image values, we want to reassure the leaders of tomorrow that there is more than a microphone and 0 waistline. At Girls Rock Camp Vancouver we want the young ladies to pick up the guitars and rock out.
There are other girls rock camps around, of course. You can find most of them through the Girls Rock Camp Alliance (but not Vancouver, yet, because they’re still in the process of joining).
(If anyone wants to start a GRC Edmonton, I would totally help out.)
On their myspace page. The album (Trio B.C.) comes out on June 2.
Before I start this update, I should get something out of the way: Ladies On The Charts is not meant as a judgement of the compilers-of-charts who are referenced. The chart-compilers are just reporting what is. This is a measurement of a symptom, it isn’t in and of itself the problem.
With that out of the way, the chart! This weeks R3-30 had two songs by women, thirteen by mixed groups, and fifteen by men. This makes it the only chart I’ve counted up so far where female artists and mixed groups make up half of the chart. That’s kind of cool.

Using my awesome powers of deduction, I was able to fill in the gap from last week’s podcast, so I can now report that last week the R3-30 had two songs by women, ten by mixed groups, and eighteen by men. So the change this week is three more mixed groups and three fewer all-male groups. Pretty impressive.

It’s the prize in their shirt design contest. You have to be in the US to enter (so far as I can tell). I’d be sad about this, but my graphic design skills are pretty lacking, so I wouldn’t have a chance anyways.
I’ve added a link to FEMMUSIC to the links page. They’ve got some cool stuff over there; check out the interview with Schuyler Fisk.
The Billboard chart for 2009-05-30* came out today, so here’s another update. This will be the last one before Monday, because I’m going to wait for the podcast before I update the R3-30. This week’s Billboard chart had fourteen songs by women, seven by mixed groups, and twenty-nine by men.

This is a fairly big change from last week’s eleven by women, nine by mixed groups, and thirty by men. That’s a pretty big increase in songs by women**, but sadly, it’s mostly at the expense of mixed groups.

* I was confused enough by this to actually read what the date is for. Apparently, it’s the date on the front of the issue of Billboard in which that chart appears, which is itself eight days after the date on which that issue of Billboard is first available for sale. It’s so clear! I don’t know why I didn’t see it before!
** You know, compared to this week’s change in the Neilsen SoundScan, which is about all I have for comparison at this point.***
